Nigerian Passport Update You May Not Be Aware Of

The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has initiated a contactless passport renewal system to streamline the application process for Nigerians both domestically and internationally. This system enables applicants to complete the renewal process online, reducing the need for physical visits to immigration offices. The pilot phase commenced in January 2025 in select states, including Lagos, Abuja, Rivers, and Kano, with plans for expansion to other regions.

1. Introduction of Contactless Passport Renewal

2. Enhanced Online Application Process

The NIS has fully automated the passport application process, allowing applicants to:

  • Complete application forms online.
  • Upload necessary documents.
  • Make payments electronically.
  • Schedule appointments for biometric data capture.

This automation aims to reduce errors, expedite processing times, and improve overall efficiency.

3. Expansion of Passport Printing Facilities Abroad

To better serve Nigerians in the diaspora, the NIS has installed new passport printing machines at consulates in Atlanta and New York. Operational since February 2025, these facilities are expected to alleviate delays and enhance service delivery for Nigerians residing in the United States.

4. Visa-Free and Visa-on-Arrival Destinations

As of 2025, Nigerian passport holders can access 55 countries and territories without obtaining a visa before departure. This includes 25 visa-free destinations and 28 countries offering visas on arrival. Notable examples are Barbados, Benin, and Ghana. These arrangements facilitate easier travel and promote international mobility for Nigerian citizens.
